Dating Your Spouse

Dating Your Spouse

“I am tired. We can’t afford this outing right now. You know I get back home late, I can’t see how it will work! Who would look after the children?” These and many more are some of the important reasons that stop couples from dating each other. Wait a minute, did we say dating? Yes, we did – dating is not just an activity that happens among singles planning to get married. According to, dating is “social appointment, engagement, or occasion arranged beforehand with another person”. One of the ways to measure the intimacy or romance in your marriage is the amount of time you invest in building and nurturing your relationship with your spouse. According to a survey of 517 women, ages 25-60, sponsored by the K-Y Brand, 81% of women acknowledged that they let other activities take priority over sexual intimacy in their marriage.

“When a man has taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war, neither shall he be charged with any business: but he shall be free at home one year, and shall bring happiness to his wife whom he has taken” Deuteronomy 24:5. Looking beyond the literal translation of this verse, we think the message here is to give attention to your spouse. This implies that we must learn to reprioritise every other demand on our time. If you are waiting to have enough time, money or energy, you will never get it done. Rather than complain about the distance in your marriage and the disconnection in your communication with your spouse, set up a dating process. We ensure that we talk during the day, then have some time at night just to bond, unwind and know what is happening in each other’s world. This works for us, find what works for you. We wish you the best on this rewarding journey.

THINK & ACT: Take action now; send a text, plan to get home early, put the children to bed one hour earlier, do your best to spend time with each other and see many recurring problems fizzle out.

This is so true; especially in this part of the world. (Africa) couples forget what it means and how important it is to keep pursuing their spouses.
