Compatibility in marriage Chidi and Victor Akunna

Compatibility

Compatibility is critical to relationships, especially marriage. If you would be living the rest of your life with your spouse, it would be a great idea to be compatible.

The Oxford Dictionary defines compatibility “as a state in which two things are able to exist or occur together without problems or conflict.” This simply means that it is not necessarily about being the same, that would be boring and predictable. It is about having a common ground, sharing common values (can two work together unless they agree?), sometimes being opposite, but connecting well.

An introvert does not need to marry another introvert to have a happy marriage. However, every couple needs to share common values, know and accept each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

We are different from each other in a lot of ways, but we have found ways to harness our differences synergistically. For instance, when we worked on our books together, our skills, backgrounds, experiences and personalities played different roles in producing the final work.

Similarity

Even when we have similar strengths and weaknesses in specific areas, we have learnt to allow benchmarks, such as who was available at the time, who has a better skill in that specific area, etc., to determine who takes charge. It is not about who takes the credit, but about accomplishing our objectives.

We must accept each other’s strengths and weaknesses and above all, discuss and clarify our values and expectations, if we are to enjoy a deeper level of intimacy.

How would you rate your marital intimacy, with 0 being the least and 10 being the highest?
